Pleasant Valley
Pleasant Valley Cemetery is located within the city limits of Cedar Hill, Texas, on the southwest side. Sometimes referred to as Holland Cemetery, but the official name has always been Pleasant Valley. The cemetery came into existence when the 12 year old son of Jacob Gardner (1812-1899) and Drusilla (Ground) Boydstun (1811-1856) was kicked by a horse and killed in 1848. The boy was buried under an old oak tree. Jacob Boydstun, James Holland, M.A. Davis and others cleared the land as a cemetery.
Jacob deeded 3 1/2 acres of land to W.S. Ricketts, Robert Ground and James Holland, as trustees for the Christian Church and School on August 1, 1870. The Pleasant Valley Association installed an iron fence surrounding the property in 1972. New burials in the cemetery are limited to descendants only due to limited space.
Over the years, the cemetery has been maintained by different individuals. P.G. Lewis helped tend the cemetery during the 1930s-1940s. One of the graves he paid special care to was that of M.A. Davis, who helped to clear the land for the cemetery. Mr. Davis, because of his color, has been buried on the opposite side of the creek.
Many of the land grants are on file in Dallas County. Census data from 1850 is also available in Dallas County. Many families, including the Boydstuns, Grounds, Hollands, Holveck, and Rapes (pronounced RABE) settled in the area.
